One of the most interesting assignments for us is joining our winery clients during blending sessions. For many wineries these decisions are made collaboratively. We methodically taste and retaste numerous lots of wine from different blocks and clones throughout the vineyard with the entire team. The decisions we make will impact key factors, such as the amount of each clone in the final blend, the texture of the wine, the percentage of new oak and, of course, how much of each wine will be bottled (both in 750ml and large format).
Such was the case last Friday morning as we met our team at Meteor Vineyard in the Coombsville AVA of Napa Valley to make the blending decisions for the 2014 vintage. 2014 was a textbook, classic vintage in Napa Valley. The wines taste spectacular; filled with beautiful, dark fruit that resonates immediately from the glass, and supported by plenty of firm structure which will help them age gracefully. Led through the session by winemakers Dawnine and Bill Dyer, we tasted, analyzed, discussed and made our final decisions on what will surely be exciting wines from a fabulous vintage. Cheers!
